When creating a top-down shooter in Game Maker Studio 2, I found myself needing to animate my backgrounds to give the game a more dynamic feel. After researching and experimenting with different methods, I discovered that animating backgrounds using Inkscape is a viable solution.

To achieve this effect, I first created multiple background images for each frame of my animation. For my particular project, I needed four different backgrounds. Since Game Maker Studio 2 does not have a built-in feature for animating backgrounds, I had to create my own animation system.

In the Step Event of a controller object, I used a timer variable to control the speed of the animation. This allowed me to set a delay of one second between frame switches. I also had to code my own method for swapping the background images in the room based on the timer value.

To create the animated water effect, I used a combination of Inkscape and Game Maker Studio 2's built-in image processing features. By using horizontal tiling and parallax scrolling, I was able to achieve a realistic and immersive environment for my game.

In addition to animating the backgrounds, I also needed to add a day/night cycle to my game. This required checking the system clock every hour or so and changing the sky from a tiled blue sky to a night sky with a moon. I accomplished this by using an alarm in Game Maker Studio 2 that checked for changes to the save file.

To ensure that the game's state was accurately reflected in the background, I created a controller object that told the background what changes had been made to the world. This allowed me to achieve the desired level of immersion and interactivity in my game.

Overall, using Inkscape and Game Maker Studio 2's built-in features, I was able to create an engaging and dynamic game environment that captivated players.
